Opera as Firmware on Wii?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed.

It seems that the Opera browser that is currently being adapted for use with the Wii will not be sold seperately for the Wii, unlike the DS. When Opera’s Scott Hedrick was talking to IGN he revealed that the version of the browser for the Wii would be very similar to the normal Opera. He said,

(It) will be based on the same core as all Opera deliveries and will have the same leading support for W3C web standards and Street HTML as the desktop browser.

Unfortunately he didn’t comment on other features of the browser, but he did say that the lack of a keyboard for the Wii isn’t going to be a problem.

The Wii remote control is an extremely advanced tool… I cannot specifically comment on the lack of keyboard, but many devices running Opera don’t have keyboards, such as the Nintendo DS, and feature on-screen keyboards to solve this problem.

Perhaps most excitingly he did reveal that you will not need to buy the software for the Wii, when asked if the browser will come as standard with the console he said,

Nintendo has not yet announced how Opera will be available on Wii, but I can confirm that it will not be sold as a separate item, as it is for Nintendo DS.

The most likely way it seems would be to have the software built into the Wii making it a lot easier to use for everyone, this seems more likely with the always on feature of the Wii.

This is great news, I currently use Opera as a browser and it’s great.

Well , thats certainly a good news but there are a few issues with Opera which I hope would be fixed in these versions. For eg., Opera has a problem with javascript functions , and yes to compete with Firefox it has to increase its cache.

What I want to know is how will the Opera browser on the Wii work with certain websites? Will it work just like a PC’s web browser?

I think that it should work pretty much the same as the PC version but without some features and maybe with some Wii specific features.
