Nintendo Dismisses Rumors of Wii Hard Drive

So how many Virtual Console games have you bought? Have you filled up your limited Wii memory already? If, so I bet you thought that Nintendo would alleviate some of your memory concern by releasing the oft rumored Wii hard drive… well, today that rumor has been squashed.
Play.tm has a few interesting quotes from a Nintendo official.
“The way that we look at it is, we really don’t want people storing every single game they buy on their drive,” responded Nintendo of America PR manager, Eric Walter.
“When you buy a game, it’s yours forever, so you can delete it, and go back and get it at any time you want. In a way, we liken it to putting music on your iPod; you listen to it for a while, and then you get tired of it, and you pull it off, and you put some new stuff on.”
This all sounds fine and good, but this just seems like a huge waste of time. Deleting and re-downloading games every time you want to play something. If you buy it… you should be able to keep it… and Nintendo should make this happen.
If only there was some sort of device that you could attach to your Wii… that had extra memory… and you could save data to it.

you can always use a SD card, but im not sure if you can play the games directly from it…
I have mixed feeling about this view. One the one hand I tend to agree with Nintendo’s decision to not bring out an external hard drive because at this moment in time there isn’t really a need to. Even if you do fill up your internal memory with VC games you can always copy them onto a external SD memory card for storage purposes. That way you can store away games you don’t play often to make room for other games. Right now I have a 2GB SD card which is more than enough to satisfy my needs.
After all, how often is a customer going to fill up their internal and external memory with VC games?
On the other hand I can see a flaw in this SD card ideology. Lets say you use your SD card to store other info, like photo’s and music. There could also be plans in future games to utilise the SD memory for storing extra game features. For example, isn’t Smash Brothers Brawl hoping to release a level editor feature that will allow you to save levels onto an SD card? You’ll have to decide which is more important for memory space, extra game features or storing VC games.
Is there a maximum SD card storage limit on a Wii? I’ll have to check the manual.
However all might not be lost. Seeing as the Wii has USB ports at the back then it is plausible that the Wii may get a firmware update to allow external HDD to be added and accessible in the future. After all they’ve added USB keyboard functionality to the Wii.
