Should the Wii Play DVD’s?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed.

Having the Wii Play DVD’s… is there really a high demand for this? Wouldn’t you agree that probably 99.9% of people who own Wii’s already have a DVD player? I’m just saying, I don’t see this being a very big draw for Nintendo, I don’t see many people buying a Wii for the DVD playback.

Wii + DVD = ?

Maybe Nintendo has came to their senses, since they promised this feature this year… they recently dropped this plan to focus fully on filling the high demand for the consoles. Why discuss new consoles when you can’t even keep the originals on the shelf?

Tech.co.uk has an interesting point about this matter, “Although there was no denial of a new Wii sometime next year, this doesn’t mean that a redesigned console is on the cards. What is most likely is that Nintendo will add DVD playback firmware to new consoles once its factories have caught up with retailer orders they already have”.

So what do you say, would you like the Wii to have the option to play DVD’s… or are you happy the way it is?

I have to say I’d really like to see DVD playback on the Wii. I personally have had my wii in a variety of simple setups where it’s just my Wii, and a TV set. the Wii is such a small/compact unit that it’d be nice to take it out….play games…then after a while pop a video in to watch, especially since I can’t imagine too much cost differential, DVD players are cheap. It would be nice though to only have to worry about one input into my system.

Also, for those of us who have lots of stuff in our audio/video cabinets….one less device really does mean a lot, not to have to hook both up.

Would I buy a Wii for a DVD player….no….but I know many many friends who only have a PS2, and use it quite often as a DVD player.

You make some valid points about space saving and just the overall ease of using it was a DVD player. My main concern is, don’t you think that this will cause it to wear out faster?

I think that it might as well play DVDs and that it’s kind of stupid that it didn’t in the first place. It would’ve just made too much sense.

That said, I don’t think they should worry about it at this point in time and concentrate on fulfilling demand as you said.

Don’t they put mod chips in Wiis to allow not only multi region gaming, but also pirate copies being played? And aren’t those pirate copies being burnt onto DVD-Rs? So it’s seems to me that the Wii can play DVDs like anything else.

So it seems to me that they can add DVD playback functionality in the future if they wish, via a firmware update. Once there’s enough demand for DVD playback and they can cope with orders then they’ll do a mass update. Or perhaps they’ll include it as a Wii channel for you to buy, just like the Opera browser is on sale rather than a free download.

I think you all make valid points but I’ve been using a PC to Wii transfer software that allows me to watch movies on my Wii which kind of solves the problem. check out my blog http://doyler-newnintendowii.blogspot.com/

Why don’t they just publish a DVD playing software on WiiWare? Isn’t that how PCs do it? That way, people who want to play DVDs on their Wiis (including those of us who got our Wiis a year ago) can download the software (and pay the licensing fee), and people who don’t see a need for it can skip it. Seems like a win-win-win to me.

Yes, I think it would be awesome to have have dvd-playback added to Wii. But I think that a CD should be sold at stores that if you buy it and put it in the Wii then add it as a channel (or something like that) then it could have it’s own dvd player channel, then I would be happy. It would probly attract more people to buy the Wii.

I hope that will happen in the near future.

We’ve had Wii since last Christmas(2006). The HD set we have it hooked up to is from early 2001, and it only has two component inputs along with a bunch of composite ones. Since we use one component input for the HD receiver, we had to make a choice for the second one to support the Wii with the optional progressive scan cable, or a progressive scan DVD player. For this one reason it would be nice if the Wii was be able to play DVD’s.

One thing that nobody has mentioned is that Nintendo might have to pay additional royalties if they enable DVD playback. If that raises the cost of the console, I’m against it. Besides, for me, it seems like using it for such would wear it out quicker. But I see the point that some people have, and I like the idea of having software sold through WiiWare that enables DVD playback like on a PC. Hopefully Nintendo will let that happen.

It’s kinda stupid for not being able to play DVD …

    Sidebets….

Wii DVD Playback Console Channel….2000 Wii points or less (ie $20)…in mid-late 2008.

Let folks decide for themselves if they’d like to pay for the programming to have DVD functionality on their Wii.

    Any takers?

This would be an easy cash grab available for Nintendo IMHO without alienating anybody. Don’t care about it…don’t buy it…but its always there if you want it.

Bet alot of parents would fork over the $20…then the kids can pack the DVD player & Game console in one box…Perfect for travel.

I think it’d be great if the Wii came with DVD playback, and like most of the other people on here, yea I’d say throw it on as a channel, and let me buy it so that it doesn’t hurt those who don’t need it. I’m going off to college next year so yea, my family has a DVD player now, but if I can save myself an extra $40 - 50 by not buying a DVD player for my dorm room, and instead it just comes on the Wii… well that’d be pretty nice..

I also think it’s odd how this DVD playback stuff was ‘promised’ to be on Wiis by late ‘07 (this promise was made in ‘06, saw it on engadget i think…) and yet, now it’s april of 08 and still, nothing.

sidenote: where’re the other colors from E3?? im liking the black :-)

Well to be HONEST ALL OF YOU GUYS bring out really good points in regards to this situation and yea I don’t think they should make promises they CANT keep but either way I’m still waiting patiently for this feature that they MUST add at some point even though I don’t wanna risk wearing my Wii out so much but hey their build by awesome Asains so they gotta be strong!!! lol… and well i mean as a Nintendo Gamer that I am I never really found the X-Box 360 or PS3 to be as appealing as the Wii… and yes I love my Wii to death but I really do think they should focus on their demands for now… =/ anywho for all you Wii Nintendo gamers out there hit me up!!! http://www.myspace.com/xochicalli_weirdo
