The Great Holiday 2007 Wii Shortage
Published by Jeremy on November 14th, 2007Be honest, does this really surprise anyone? The Wii has been an elusive console to find ever since it was released last year. With the Holiday season set to kick off here next week, finding a Wii might be a version of a Snipe hunt.
According to BBC News, back in April Nintendo estimated they would ship approximately 14 million units… since then that number has sky rocketed to 17.5 million. Despite shipping an additional 3.5 million Nintendo as said that not everyone who wants a Wii this Christmas will be able to get one.

The huge demand for the Wii is causing smaller stores to raise the prices of the console… while the larger retailers are bundling the console with several games pushing the price well over $400. For the average parent, it’s very hard to spend that much money on a game.
Sure you can always find one on eBay… but you know what kind of prices your going to have to pay on there once you get closer to the holiday.
I was actually quite surprised yesterday, a local Wal-Mart here in Kentucky had about 10-15 in stock yesterday. I was astounded at the number of people who knew about the recent surplus in Wii stock. I was in the checkout line about 5 minutes… they received about 7 phone calls all regarding the Nintendo Wii.
It’s not even the Holiday season yet… but the rush has already begun. How many of you folks out there are going to brave the waters and try to find a Wii for the holidays?

About

I was in Target the first week of August and happened upon a full shelf of Wii. Anticipating my families desire for one this holiday season I purchased it and stored it at a friends house. I am now very glad I did that to avoid this position many parents find themselves in now. But like you said this is not a newsflash - we knew it was coming.
Jeremy,
This exactly why I have built my site. To aid people in finding a Wii without all the hassle. There is no need to run around town looking. Just visit my site, NowInStock.net, and sign up for the free email alerts. When my spiders see stock available for the stores you want alerts for, I will email you right away. Granted you still need to be quick, but you do note need to run around town. For example, just this morning, Best Buy had stock of the console in. It sold out in just under 30 minutes. I have already received a handful of emails from people thanking me for saving them so much stress.
I bought my on eBay about six months back. Console, two remotes, two numchuks, Wii Sports, and Wii Play for under $400 with shipping. Not a “deal”, but was a lot easier than running around town and worth my time and effort to pay close to market for everything, yet have it shipped to my door!
WII- Wonderful inpurchaseable item…
I was in BestBuy yesterday. I checked their in-store stock locator and it said they had 10 Wiis. I stopped the nearest blue shirt and ask him about their availability and he looked a little sheepish. At first he said that their site was wrong and they didn’t have any. I then asked him if he was sure and asked if his sales manager wasn’t sending them out one by one. He then admitted that they actually had a decent quantity in stock but Nintedo told them not to sell any until December. Has anyone else heard anything like this?
I was able to track down a Wii Fit using http://www.linejumpers.com. It has email alerts, yes, but it does something that the rest of the sites do not do, and that is a desktop alert feature that will auto-open a browser window when the product I want comes in stock. Its fast, test it out.
