Wii Need Better Games!
Published by Jeremy on January 10th, 2008I mean seriously… can it get much worse? I’m not talking about the “selection” of the games on the market right now… I’m referring to the quality of the games. I think you would be hard pressed to name 5 Wii games that were good – that didn’t include some type of sporting event or a controller attachment.
I’m not sure about the rest of you… but when I go looking for a new Wii game I’m quite tired of seeing just a massive wall of kids games and rehashes of Wii Sports or Wii Play.
Chris over at our sister site WiiBlog.net has recently posted his feelings about the game selection as well…
Now I am just one man, but I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that the biggest part of the Wii’s catalog is just uninteresting to anyone over 10 years old. Of course the fact that Nintendo has always aimed a little more toward kids games is nothing new, and maybe I’m just getting old, but there’s got to be room for some more stuff.
It’s not even just the amount of kids games. There’s nothing wrong with having a lot of those, but I look at the walls of XBox 360, PS3 and even PS2 games and I see so many more interesting titles.
Need I remind Nintendo and the other game manufacturers that they aren’t just making games for the little tike’s anymore… it needs to be a little better balanced.
But in all seriousness… are you guys happy with the game selection?

I don’t agree with you or your partner. I think you should list out the games that you have and have your readers fill in the gaps in your collection. And when looking at the walls for the other systems aren’t you tired of seeing rehashes of Final Fantasy or Socom or any FPS?
It’s true much like Hollywood these days… almost everything is a re-make or just a rehash of some other game.
It’s kind of not fair to say everything is a rehash of Socom… wouldn’t every war/espionage/military/covert ops game essentially be the same? (And by same I’m implying the style of the game play not the same missions/settings etc.)
As far as Final Fantasy goes.. never played it… any of them. I’ve had the opportunity to play them… just never cared enough to.
So I think you can expect certain rehashes of games… but how many times can they put out a bowling/fishing/crazy zany party game for the Wii… before it’s just too much and people start caring.
I partly agree with you, but there are a couple of great games for wii out there. Especially compared to the GameCube days.
A few ones that I really like:
* Zelda (Very fun single player)
* Tiger Woods (if you’re into golf, equally fun single as multi)
* Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (2 players - boring single player)
* Simpsons Game (Very fun for two player co-op, ok single player)
* SSX Blur (fun both in single and in multi play)
What I would like to see is a good co-op multiplayer game. Something like Halo on xbox or “LOTR - RotK” for GC. And of course online capable games!! And a GOOD war game would also be nice - Medal of Honor was a joke (fun, but too short and boring multiplayer), and Call of Duty was barely playable.
Wiitard: With all due respect, I do appreciate suggestions on games at times, but I know enough about what kind of games I would want to play without relying on the opinions of strangers to sell me on them.
I’m not saying I never read reivews or find them helpful. But I generally have to have some interest in a title (regardless of how small that interest is) to even want to hear somebody else’s take on it.
So, I do apprecaite your suggestion, but I don’t feel that it is the solution that I am looking for.
As far as looking at the other walls of games, yes there are many rehashes, but at least these rehashes seem to cover a lot more broad of spectrum.
To some extent, it just comes down to personal tastes as well.
I totally agree. The wii’s release schedule is dismal, with buy-worthy games coming out once every two months. My collection includes the best wii titles, in my opinion, but they are mostly played out by now, and now I’m just waiting for the next good game. I expect these games to be spaced far enough apart to keep me waiting two months between purchases…brawl, kart, worms…what else? I definitely would be buying more wii games if there were more titles coming out, but the big fish games are few and far between, and the “good/ok” releases are remakes, licensed titles, and kiddie titles. Then there’s the overwhelming heap of crap games that come out every month. Nintendo should not be allowing most of these idiots to publish anything on the wii, their intentions are obviously to trick children and parents into buying terrible games. This is what I want from Nintendo:
1) some form of castlevania
2) a megaman game
3) a decent arcade-style racer (remember, i said ‘decent’)
4) some kind of flight/helicopter wargame
5) a decent boxing game (like wii sports boxing, but an entire game)
6) any game that is a ps2 re-release should be value-priced, like RE4 (are you listening, Okami and Bully?)
I’m with you 100%. The biggest disappointment with the system is the lack of games. The selection is dismal and the reviews for most of the games are pretty weak too. I’m waiting anxiously for Wii Fit, just because it at least seems interesting. The rest of the games look like they were made for infants and mongoloids.
It’s a sad state of affairs.
KingDavid: A Castlevania game (done right) would be a huge boost for the Wii.
The Wii just needs that one title that is it’s “safety blanket”… much like Halo for the Xbox and GTA for the Playstation.
Sure, Nintendo has Mario and his band of rapscallions… but the Mario Bros. style of game isn’t for everyone. They need something a little edgier (for teens and adults) … much like (don’t mean to repeat myself) Halo & GTA.
Hopefully they’ll strike gold with one of their upcoming releases… but to be honest I’m not anticipating it.
I will admit that I am a fan of said rapscallions. At least the classics…mostly pre-Wario.
The issue is, that when a good game is released, sales are usually dismal. This does the exact opposite of enticing developers to do better.
When good games sell well, and horrid ones sell badly then you’ll see an improvement in the library.
Zerox: I don’t think this is the issue at all, first off - what are these “good games” you speak of that didn’t sale very well.
I stand by my original question, “I think you would be hard pressed to name 5 Wii games that were good – that didn’t include some type of sporting event…”
*Super Mario Galaxy
*NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
*Zack & Wiki: Quest For Barbaros’ Treasure
*Medal of Honor Heroes 2
*Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Then there is also a never-ending list (/sarcasm) of exceptionally good classic VC titles.
All of those are GOOD games. Wii Patrons that actually have those games seem to enjoy them. Also, the only game to do overwhelmingly well (in it’s short lifespan) in sales on that list, is, you guessed it, Super Mario Galaxy which failed to do well in Japan and Europe on launch date despite it’s namesake.
Other games that had trouble selling out as well as Galaxy, but were fun to play were:
*Mercury Meltdown Revolution
*Trauma Center: New Blood
*The Sims 2: Castaway
*Geometry Wars: Galaxies
*Guilty Gear XX Accent Core
*The GodFather: Blackhand Edition
*Excite Truck
*Sonic and the Secret Rings
*Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
*Super Monkey Ball
*Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
*Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
And much more. There’s even Twilight Princess, which until now, has just reached 4.36 million sales total. That’s frightening considering that Super Mario Galaxy has already passed it out with a 4.55 million total sales.
I reiterate. The problem is not the support, it’s the consumer. Not enough good games are being bought, and this in turn becomes a bane for developers. That very reason is probably why most Developers use the Wii for a quick cash-in and nothing more.
You would better hope that the 3rd-parties get quicker on the uptake.
I’ll tell you one thing we DON’T need for the Wii is another $50 compilation of lame mini-games (or ANY mini-games for that matter).
ceriallytho: I completely agree with you, some of these mini game (games) are pretty fun… but it’s getting pretty ridiculous now. Seems like a new one comes out every week.
Don’t worry. This problem was caused by game companies thinking the Wii would fail. Why make motion controlled games when you can make a game for 360 and PS3 without having to make any changes? But now that the Wii has soared in popularity these companies will be scrambling to come up with new titles for the Wii. The games are coming. But for now, what about the game “No More Heroes?” It looks great and it isn’t coming out on the other platforms.
I’m looking forward to “No More Heroes”, “Worms” (even though the dropped netplay), “Rygar”, “Mario Kart”, “Bomberman Land” (again, no netplay…why is everyone so stupid?), “Bully”, “Okami”, “SSBB”, and “Samba de Amigo”. Hmmmmm, only Heroes is a new IP. Even though there isn’t much to look forward to right now, i can’t help but agree with Filazafer. There’s bound to be some bright young development studios out there ready to make an original concept that’s fun, simple, and can only be done on the wii. Then they’ll get rich, and we’ll all have some new games that are actually worth checking out.
First off there is maybe a handful of games that are good for the Wii. But seriously Nintendo had said that the new Wii games where going to be better than the Gamecube and not so much for kids. But Nintendo is notorious for selling games to kids. I’m sick of it cause most games for Wii are for kids. I would really like Nintendo to stop making stupid mario and Sonic games. I love mario galaxy but mario vs sonic olympics? it was rated horrible on x-play, and STOP WITH the mini games. Gives us something new! Something that dosen’t have Mario,SOnic or bomberman in it to sell and for that matter Metroid. Perhaps even a new controller! so that i don’t have to use the Wii remote. It’s time for new games something epic like Halo wich was original!!!!! I love the wii but i would love to see better original games for it. I don’t want to see Mario is cooking or Mario party 10 <—so bored of that series. However Nintendo does neeed a brand new Super Mario game, where it would be like the Mario 1,2 and 3 for NES. But without 2D. Super paper mario was bad, it was an rpg for kids! They just need to remake the original Super Mario Bros. where i have to keep beating castles to get to bowser! Enough said i’m still not sure why i own a Wii…..
Game i own:
Super mario Galaxy *****
Resident Evil *****
Metal Slug ****
Guitar Hero *****
Games i am planning on buying
Soul Calibur Legends
all the rest suck….
Dude i appsolutly aggree, There games are like Hanna Montana and retarded games. The need to make a desent war game. I am a huge fan of wargames and Moh heros or vangaurd ant so good. And why did they cancle Moh Airborn, or Call of Duty 4. O well i guees. Have fun i think
o wait here are okay games i think.
1. Super mario Galaxy
2. Madden 08
3. Guitar hero
I completely agree… Like mario kart… they made it more for kids and too easy now.
I bet most of the game are childish games around 70%.. What Wiitard said i agree with that… but Wii has to much childish games they need more action insted of these penguin games or w.e………… when you look back on 64 and cube, they had balanced amount of games, child games and adult games but Wii now…. woah
look i no games ima kid r teen watever but when it comes down to it tha wii really needs to step up there games i mean its cool to have family games speeding time with ur folks and everything but lets face it not everyone likes those types of games they need action for example DMC4 was an awesome game graphics beautiful action need i say more but tha wii is kinda dead wat is ninja reflex!! come on now the wii has some much potential but tha guys that make these crapy games is holding it back tha wii needs games like DMC4 and and ninja gaiden 2 heck they didnt even put soinc tha hedgehog the wii that would’ve been good nintendo is much closer to sega then sony nor microsoft i mean if this is wat tha wii has to offer then its no better then gamecube cause it went through tha same problem like tha wii it didnt have that much of good game selection like ps2 r xbox tha wii lacks action some games graphics to tha wii can have tha most awesomeist games but instead they try to make it more fun then action thats wat people want nowadays i mean this is suppose to be a next generation system but yet i think its just not up to that level yet so it may change in 09 heck it may change this year but i highly doubt that cause i still see no improvement
Let me start off saying that I have a Wii.
The only reason I bought a Wii, was for the anticipated game of SSBB and Zelda, although I already have Zelda Twilight for the gamecube. Nonethless, it’s a very good Zelda game, especially the fact that Link has a rediculously long ass Master Sword lol.
With Nintendo, you kinda have to be patient, i’m sure Nintendo didn’t leave the hardcore gamers out. Sure Nintendo may be getting HUGE on the Nintendo Wii sales, but what’s the point of buying a Wii if there are not many good games for it? so you can say, that Nintendo is suffering with the video game sales. The best games out right now are: Zelda TP, SSBB, RE4, Guitar Hero 3 and Aerosmith, Rock Band, No More Heroes, Mario Galaxy, Mario Wii Kart or something, Geometry Wars (and I say Geometry Wars because it is a very addicting game), Soul Calibur Legends ( To be honest I did not like that game one bit, I don’t know about you people though, to me that game killed the real meaning of Soulcalibur, because Soulcalibur is a fighting game, not a lame ass Action Adventure Game), and of course the game that will come out this october for all the consoles, Guitar Hero World Tour, I think it’s called. It could be better than Rock Band, and I’m hoping to be so because it is said that the Wii will have downloadable songs for that game unlike Rock Band…which only existed downloadable content for the Xbox….and yet there are still more games we need to anticipate such as: F-ZERO, another Zelda game (and I hope the other zelda game does not look cartoony like crappy Windwaker, Link is a Bad Ass, Good Looking Guy with an awesome sword and shield. Thank you for making windwaker look cartoony), and possibly another mario, but I think Galaxy is the last best for the Wii so probably not….with those games in mind, video game sales will be over the roof, but if they keep making video games out of cartoon movies or games that just plain suck, and try to trick kids and parents into buying them, then they wont get very far…because the Smart, Loyal, Hard Core Nintendo Fan, knows what to buy and what not to buy
One more thing I would like to say.
Shooting games actually work very well with the Wii, I mean RE4 on wii I absolutely loved!…it was so easy to shoot those zombies thank you Wii mote. The Wii Remote is actually perfect for shooting games, yeah we need more games like RE4 and such
I totally agree with you guys on the point that the wii games ARE ALL PARTY STUFF!!!
were not just asking for war games “although they are fun :D” we are asking for nintendo to have a more broader range of games! I mean when the we wasn’t out yet my brother and i wanted it so bad because of games like Red Steel, Excite Truck, Madden, metroid prime and more. It seemed as if they started out with a really broad range of games and then slowly lost its variety to only party games.
So maybe we need to write nintendo or some other game company’s about this matter and really get the facts.
Games i would like to get:
Guitar Hero World Tour
and others
