Wii demand will plummet in 2009. Why? 2009 is the year of High Definition. PS3 and Xbox 360 will both lower their prices by Dec. 2008, probably matching each other. PS3 is a blu-ray player out of the box. Both systems offer 1080p. Wii offers 480i/p at best, standard def at best.

By Feb. 2009, most will have HDTVs and will want HD game consoles. Wii doesn’t deliver here. Wii will still sell, but dramatically less. I think we could see the Wii lose it’s top spot by the end of the 2009 Xmas season.

There’s no way Nintendo has actually made 2 million consoles a month since Nov. 2006. Nov 2006 to right now (March 1, 2008) would be 16 months. That would be 32 million consoles produced, even say minus 2 million b/c it is just March 1, 30 million consoles. Wii is just at under 22 million consoles sold right now, so they’re 8-10 million short of what they planned to be at in terms of production, since the supply obviously gets evaporated as soon as the consoles hit.

David,
If you research a little more you’ll find that they have been producing ~2 million a month BEFORE launch. At that time, they supposedly had plans to make 7-9 million a month AT LAUNCH. This was the fourth quarter 2006 if you’ll recall. They have had a resonable amount of time to deal with this issue. They have certainly lost sales to the other consoles as the others have begun to approach the (non-ebay) price point of a Wii.

Take a look at the most popular console, the PS2, and tell me that you can’t sustain high volume for a long time on a popular console. =)

I DO NOT THINK NINTENDO IS CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS RIGHT NOW. NINTENDO IS JUST TRYING TO CONTROL THE MARKET BY PUTTING A STRONG GRIP ON THEIR PRODUCT. NINTENDO IS A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY AND NINTENDO WOULD HAVE TO LOSE 5 MILLION CUSTOMERS BEFORE THEY WOULD START SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS, AND SAY; “YOU KNOW WHAT, SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE.” I THOUGHT ABOUT TELLING NINTENDO THAT THEY ARE GUNNA LOSE ME AS A CUSTOMER, AND THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT HOW THEY ARE TOO BIG TO WORRY.

YOU CAN BUY A wii EVERY 15 MINUTES ON ebay.com I’M JUST AS DISAPPOINTED ABOUT NOT FINDING A Wii to buy. REMEMBER THAT NINTENDO IS MAKING LIKE 1 MILLION wii units per month. AFTER A WHILE…..EVERYONE WILL HAVE ONE AND THEN AFTER YOU HAVE ONE, YOU WILL NOT CARE. DO STILL BUY THE Wii BECAUSE IF YOUR KIDS WANT A wii, IT IS NOT YOUR KID’S FAULT IF YOU ARE ANGRY AT NINTENDO’S SUPPLY/DEMAND PROBLEM.
IF I WAS A KID AND ALL THE POPULAR KIDS HAD A Wii, THEN I WOULD WAIT FOR MY PARENTS TO BUY ME A Wii TO BE ONE OF THE HIP KIDS IN SCHOOL ALSO.

I have always been a loyal nintendo fan and have purchased every system they made in the past. Mainly because my girls and I really enjoyed playing the zelda series. I now refuse to purchase a wii because of the games nintendo seems to be playing with their production. If they don’t shape up they are going to lose a lot more customers. When I say I refuse to purchase, I do mean that I will never purchase another nintendo product ever. I don’t think that the nintendo execs. really understand the market here in the USA and don’t intend on doing anything about ramping up production. I can play games too………but guarantee that it won’t be a nintendo.

Nintendo has said elsewhere that they’re not willing to compromise on quality, which would be necessary if they suddenly up production by going to new suppliers. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of a dead Wii, while Xbox 360’s red ring of death is notorious, and new PS3s have reportedly a 40% failure rate in Holland (I was one with a DOA PS3, Sony said it takes 15 working days to replace).

Nintendo might very well be building new fabs of their own to avoid relying on new suppliers, but those fabs take a while to build. Or they might be enjoying the hype, and sitting it out in case demand drops in the medium term which would leave them with extra capacity in their hands.

i knoe man this is stupid it took me forever to save up for a wii and now that i have the money there isnt any in stock the demand is so great they should increase production to get more monery im just saying

I have no idea what goes on behind their closed doors…but they certainly get a lot of free publicity and self-reinforcing demand from playing hard to get. They’re probably just unsure of where demand is and are leery of spending the bucks to increase supply and then outpace demand. They have increased production since first releasing the system and they are producing a lot of Wiis these days…it’s not like they’re dragging their heals. Their strategy seems to be working pretty well so far!
